Are you ready to make winter 'epic'?
Learning how to ski can seem a bit daunting, but lucky for you we've put together this essential guide for all the novices out there.
If you are an absolute beginner, a few pointers before hitting the slopes, this guide is here to help you get started!
It's natural to be a little anxious about learning something new - trust us, we know!
But don't worry - if skiing is something you're interested in trying out, then now is the perfect time.
Plus, imagine how proud of yourself you'll feel on that first run down the mountain when you realize 'hey, I'm actually doing it!'
If you're ready to take on the world of skiing with confidence and ease, then here are 8 tips prior to taking on the slopes as a beginner:
Research different resorts –
It’s important that if you’re planning a trip away to learn how to ski that you research different resorts beforehand. These days many places offer packages specifically designed for beginners so look into them before booking anything.
Buy appropriate clothing –
Investing in good quality snow gear will not only keep you warm and comfy while on the slopes but they will also provide extra padding which can come in handy when taking spills (which is inevitable!). From jackets and trousers to hats and gloves, make sure they are fit correctly and are suitable for your level of experience.
Learn basic terminology –
Knowing the technical terms associated with skiing will be very helpful once you start learning how to do it yourself! Some key words include piste (slope), powder (fresh snow), mogul (bumps) and carving (controlling turns with your skis).
Understand safety rules –
Before getting out on the slopes familiarize yourself with safety regulations such as designated ski runs, speed limits etc. This way you can ensure maximum safety while having fun at the same time!
Get professional instruction –
Even if it costs more money than teaching yourself from YouTube videos or online guides, getting proper lessons from an experienced instructor will help speed up your progress by leaps and bounds! Not only have they had years of experience dealing with beginners but they can also provide advice tailored specifically towards your needs/level of skill. All the ski resorts I have been at offer beginner ski lessons at a reasonable cost, I highly recommend them.
Practice whenever possible –
Though it might seem tedious at times when practicing movements such as stopping (various methods), turning/turning backwards etc., these drills can really make all the difference when tackling more difficult runs later down the line! By practicing you can learn how to ski in little time. Just give each maneuver several practice rounds per session until performing them becomes second nature.
Start small & build up slowly –
Don't rush things by going straight onto steeper terrain after mastering basic techniques; learn bits at a time by starting off slowly on easier runs first then work your way up over time as your confidence grows and you're skill levels improve.
Take frequent breaks–
Breaks ensure proper rest/recuperation plus allow plenty of opportunities for staying hydrated at the ski lodge, lunge or snack bar!
That's our essential tips prior to learning how to ski!
With these simple steps, you are now ready to learn the basics to skiing.
